The Book's Setting

Valle Crucis Abbey is quite real, and very special. It was built about 1200 by a Welsh chieftain named Madoc, the ruins of whose fortress, Dinas Bran, Eleanor and Sarah explore on their first day in the Dee Valley. It is at Valle Crucis that the screenplay’s introductory party is given for Eleanor and Sarah by Lady Dungannon, and they wear for the first time their famous black habits.
